Bid Calling Champion
2018 Bid-Calling Contest

Wow! I’m so thankful to all those that helped me in my auction career. There are so many people that have touched my life and helped me become better; not only a better bid caller, but a better person! Thank you to each and every one of you for having continued faith in me.
I have the excited and humbled to be named the 2018 Minnesota State Champion Auctioneer. Although I am currently living in Iowa, I was raised in Moorhead, Minnesota (Go Spuds!). It felt great to come back to my home town, be able to catch up with friends, and make new friends at the MSAA Conference. It is always an honor to share the stage with my friends that I have made along the way through the great state associations and the National Auctioneers Association. Although we are competitors during the contest, we still share unity! We all have the same passion for our industry and I want to say congratulations to each and every one of the competitors. It takes drive and determination to get up on that stage and I know every one of us had nerves/butterflies at some point within the contest. A great auctioneer/friend once told me while walking up on a stage for a competition, “Don’t try to get rid of the butterflies; just fly them in unison – march them up on stage and make them work together!”
The highlight of the weekend was the kid’s auction on Friday night. I enjoyed being up on stage with all your children at the fun auction. Next year I will have to bring my boys along to participate. Our children truly are our future and by the looks of it, our industry and our association are going to be in great hands!
A special thank you to Dave Thompson and the Minnesota State Auctioneers Association for opening the doors and inviting others to participate in the contest as well as the conference. Minnesota has some of the brightest auctioneers in the country and I am glad that you are willing to share that knowledge with the whole industry. You all put forth the hard work to make this event a success and it showed. Conference is always a great way to get refreshed through all the great classes as well as the networking. You leave feeling motivated!
Congratulations again to each and every person who competed, and thank you for your friendships.
I look forward to serving as the Ambassador for Minnesota this year, representing the state of Minnesota at the International Auctioneers Championship in Jacksonville, Florida, and to continue to promote our great industry in the many years to come!
Sincerely, David Whitaker
Hall of Champions
The Hall of Champions is reserved for the current and past Minnesota State Champion Auctioneer. Each Champion was awarded the honor of State Champion Auctioneer at the Minnesota Champion Auctioneer Contest. The contest is the showcase public event held each year at the annual Conference and Show. The contest consists of two divisions – Champion and Rookie. The Champion Auctioneer is determined through a preliminary round of selling three items and a final round of selling three items and answering three interview questions. This winner of this contest represents the industry throughout the coming year and joins a very select group of men and women in Minnesota who hold the title of Minnesota State Champion Auctioneer and are enshrined in the Hall of Champions.
